You’re too old to bring your mom breakfast in bed. This Mother’s Day, grab a nice brunch and make a day of it. (💐 Flowers not included.)

Best Spread: Ba-Ba-Reeba! in Lincoln Park or River North

As this perfect post says, “in Chicago every five years a fresh group of women in their 20s think they discovered cafe ba ba reeba and I think that’s beautiful.” Well, it’s true. But some things are classic for a reason. Split brunch tapas with mom at the OG Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba! in Lincoln Park or head to Lil’ Ba-Ba-Reeba! in River North for bottomless sangria.

Farmer’s Market Two-fer: Lula Cafe, The Duplex, or Taqueria Moran in Logan Square

The Logan Square farmer’s market kicks off Sunday, and you can usually find some beautiful bouquets there. Pick one up for mom, obviously, then mosey over to one of three spots: Lula Cafe, The Duplex, or Taqueria Moran. Everyone and their mother loves Lula. (See what I did there?) Securing a table on Mother’s Day will be tough — they do not accept brunch reservations. So either put your name in before shopping or head right next door to The Duplex. The Duplex does take reservations and offers more of a party vibe with a live brunch DJ. If you need something more low-key (and last-minute), consider walking a few blocks to Taqueria Moran for huevos a la Mexicana and strong margaritas.

Cutest Pics: Honeybear Cafe in Rogers Park

The name, the painted paisley facade, the colorful interior … everything about Honeybear Cafe is cute. Formerly The Captain's Table then A&T Pancake House and Grill, Honeybear Cafe continues a 50-year Rogers Park diner tradition — and keeps up the retro signage.

An Old-School Classic: Valois

If your mom is more laid back — a steak-and-eggs kinda girl — keep it simple with Valois, one of the country’s oldest cafeteria-style restaurants. The Obamas made this place world-famous, but Chicagoans have always known what’s good. It’s bound to be packed Sunday, so get there early.

No Reservations? Best Walk-in Options

If, like my family, you live on the edge and “play things by ear,” you and your mom might enjoy these walk-in brunch spots. Put your name down and kill time by strolling around the neighborhood!

Batter & Berries in Lincoln Park

If your mom is sweet over savory, she’ll surely enjoy some of the best French toast around.

Dove’s Lunceonette in Wicker Park

Get the hash with brisket burnt ends 🤤

Sweet Maple Cafe in Little Italy

This special little place really does feel like home

Pochos in Pilsen

Expect a wait — but you’ll have fun on 18th Street.

La Catedral Cafe in Little Village and North Lawndale

La Catedral is at the top of my chilaquiles bucket list. Also, you semi-planners can join the waitlist day-of online.
