The process to turn Grant Park into a 2.2-mile NASCAR racetrack has begun. Here’s what to know about road closures and other race details.
Road Closures You Need to Know About
Prep for the July 6–7 event began this morning: Parking restrictions along Columbus Drive between Jackson and Balbo drives went into effect.
Some road closures start next week, but there will be more as the race approaches. Jackson and Columbus drives along with Congress Circle, Roosevelt Road, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and Michigan Avenue see closures throughout June. We’ll slowly regain access by July 18.
How’d the First Year Go?
Between police overtime and construction, the city spent at least $3.5 million on the street race last year and got $620,000 in return, according to a Tribune analysis of an economic impact report in the fall.
Former Mayor Lori Lightfoot signed a three-year contract to host the street race, and Mayor Brandon Johnson said he cut a “better deal” this year.
As for attendees, the near-historic rain delayed one race and led to concerts being canceled.
What Can NASCAR Attendees Expect This Year?
Both races will be shorter. Tickets start at almost $300 for a two-day pass. Artists like Keith Urban and the Chainsmokers are set to perform.
