Illinois became a state 205 years ago Sunday. Since then, hundreds of laws have been passed in the Land of Lincoln — including quirky ones.
No Shows in Chicago Windows
Window shop and move along: The city bans exhibitions and performances in display windows that draw crowds in the public right of way.
Eavesdroppers Beware
While eavesdropping is illegal in Illinois, the term refers to intercepting or recording private conversations without all parties’ consent. So you’re probably safe spilling that tea you heard on the train.

Be sure to pronounce Joliet correctly. (Doug Kerr / Flickr)
It’s Pronounced ‘JOE-lee-ette’
Joliet specifies the correct pronunciation and spelling of the southwest suburb in its municipal code.
Don’t Mess with White Squirrels
It’s been illegal to kill or trap albino gray squirrels in Illinois after they were first spotted in downstate Olney in 1902. The town still gives the squirrels right-of-way on streets.
