Who among us doesn’t need some advice on how to navigate Chicago? That’s why the City Cast Chicago crew is here to answer your burning questions — from how to make friends to CTA etiquette.

Our first question comes from reader Ruby S., a parent whose kids are in a band.

How do up-and-coming musicians book a gig in Chicago?

  • Consistently upload music to a social media page or streaming profile like Bandcamp. It can be a good touchpoint for others to find out more about you.
  • Define your sound, aka don’t send DMs that your genre is shoegaze-pop-punk-rock-indie sleaze. Then, pitch yourself with other relevant acts. This takes the guesswork out for a talent buyer.
  • Get to know the DIY scene. DIY shows are great places to get started because they are smaller and there is less pressure to play.
  • Find local showcase nights. Chicago is known for investing in its own. Get to know local venues and see who regularly books local acts to play, and then send an email or a DM or call. Venues like Empty Bottle and Sleeping Village have regular nights where the bill is prominently up-and-coming local artists.
  • Network! Go to shows, introduce yourself, become a part of the scene (e.g., Chicago Show Cal member), and ask who to connect with about playing.
