While you’re breaking out the fall outfits, you might also be cleaning out your closet. Here’s what Chicagoans can do with the clothes they’re ready to say goodbye to.
Consider What You’re Donating
Think of the condition of the clothes you’re giving away — are they wearable? Would you give the items to a close friend? Did you wash your clothes beforehand? Those are all questions to ask before giving your stuff to a secondhand store.
Where to Donate Clothes
The free store lets neighbors pick up clothes, books, food, and more. Donate your garments during store hours Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
Brown Elephant in Northalsted, Andersonville, and Oak Park
Drop off women’s and men’s apparel, handbags, shoes, jewelry, and accessories at the North Side and suburban resale shops. Plus, the stores support LGBTQ health care provider Howard Brown Health.
Second Chance Thrift Shoppe in Mount Greenwood
Give away your gently used clothing and jewelry to the Southwest Side thrift shop on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Head to a Clothes Swap
If you want to trade out your old threads for new ones, you’re in luck. There are a few clothing swaps in Pilsen, Humboldt Park, and Uptown next weekend.
Why stop at your everyday fall wardrobe? Chicago groups are doing special Halloween swaps ahead of Halloween. Head to a boo-tique pop-up in Belmont Cragin Oct. 19–23 or trade costumes in Bridgeport Oct. 24.
Who Says You Have to Sort Your Clothes Alone?
If it’s in your budget, you can hire some Chicagoans who are experts in decluttering. Check out the Neat Method and Taskrabbit.
