March is just around the corner, bringing with it longer days thanks to Daylight Saving on March 9. Night owls will get their own treat with a lunar eclipse.
What else can you expect this March in Chicago? Let’s find out 👀
Let’s Celebrate
There are plenty of events around the city to celebrate Mardi Gras. I’ve got my eye on a Bourbon Street pop-up kitchen open March 1, 2, and 4. Try some chicken and sausage gumbo or beignets. Maybe you’re hankering for paczki to celebrate – we’ve got you covered.
Chicago doesn’t mess around with St. Patrick’s Day. On March 15, the river will be dyed green, a 63-year-old tradition. There are also various St. Paddy’s Day parades, including on the South and Northwest sides March 16. Then, on March 23, get your sneakers for the Shamrock Shuffle! Check out the 8k run or 2-mile walk, followed by a post-race party in Grant Park.
Ramadan will also be going on this month, starting Feb. 28 and going until March 29. The Islamic Circle of North America Chicago will host various events.
Local Restaurant Weeks To Check Out
While the city's main Restaurant Week has passed, you can find deals in specific neighborhoods and the burbs this month. North Side Restaurant Week has already started and will go until March 9. Greektown and West Town also have restaurant weeks this month.
Northwest Restaurant Week features spots in the Northwest suburbs and also runs through March 9. You can also find restaurant weeks in Rosemont March 2-8 and Hanover Park March 7-16.
Go Team!
March means the beginning of spring sports, and baseball is so back. The Cubs begin their season in Tokyo against the LA Dodgers March 18. The White Sox home opener is March 27 against the Angels.
The Chicago Tempest, the city’s new women’s rugby team, will debut March 23 in Evanston, facing off against the Twin Cities Gemini. Tickets for the inaugural game start at just $25.
The Chicago Stars FC kick off their season with an away match against the Orlando Pride on March 14. Their first home game will follow on March 23, when they take the field in Bridgeview against the Houston Dash.
Art for Women’s History Month
The South Side Community Art Center will open its Beyond Frames: Black Women Collectors Shaping Cultural Heritage in Chicago exhibit on Feb. 28, and it will remain open until March 29.
Frida Kahlo’s Month in Paris exhibit will open at the Art Institute on March 29 and remain open until July 13. This will be the first time Kahlo’s work will be displayed at the museum.
