Englewood residents can weigh in on the long-awaited nature trail today. The community meeting comes after the South Side project got $20 million in federal funding last month and $6 million from the city in the spring.

Ahead of today’s meeting, here’s what to know.

What is it?
The Englewood Trail would be a 1.75-mile multi-use path on an abandoned elevated railroad line.

Where is it?
The trail would be between 58th and 59th streets, from Hoyne to Wallace avenues.

When could it open?
As early as 2027.

Why has it taken so long?
The old Norfolk Southern rail was identified as a potential trail almost 20 years ago. But progress slowed due to the land swap with the controversial railway company and environmental remediation, WTTW reported.

So … will the Englewood Trail be like the 606?
Not exactly. Community leaders say the trail will be more of an elevated green space with fewer bikes. Plus, urban farms will be along the trail. Activists are also committed to making sure residents don’t get displaced, according to Block Club.

Head to the meeting at Parker Community Academy from 6–8 p.m. (Dinner will be served!)
