Need help navigating the flower shows springing up around town? Luckily, the team has visited and is sharing our tips.
City Cast Chicago podcast host Jacoby Cochran visited the city flower shows — and you can, too, for free before May 12.
- Gnomes are hidden everywhere! With around 300 designed by students, keep your eyes peeled for a few sitting on a fence, sleeping among the rocks, or the Blues Brothers on the water. Find a guide and ask which ones are for sale.
- Bring layers to take off — the temperatures swing inside.
- Still up for more exploring? Walk a few steps to the Lincoln Park Zoo. The lion cubs have gotten so big!

- Reserve a time online to learn the history and science of how plants get their names.
- The way the sun beams into the Show House lights up all of the beautiful arrangements. I found myself circling the room a few times.
- Come for the flower show, stay for the Desert House! The cactuses are from all over the world.

Hey Chicago newsletter editor Sidney Madden trekked to the north burbs before the orchid show closes March 24.
- Buy your ticket early if you are going on the weekend. It took a few tries for me to get a reservation.
- Take the Union Pacific North Metra line, and get off at Braeside.
- This former theater kid was charmed by all the circus-themed props — from the funhouse mirrors to orchids in popcorn boxes.
- The $21 ticket for nonmembers also grants you general admission.
- Forgot to pack a snack? The $7 peanut butter and jelly is tasty and cheap(er) 😅
