, my friends (and coworkers) laughed. Maybe it’s because Avondale feels a little tame. Maybe because the 20-somethings there look like Logan Square overflow. 

Time Out’s “cool” criteria covers culture, food and drink, community, livability, street life, nightlife, and “that hard-to-define sense of ‘nowness’.” Ok, fair: Avondale’s culture is historically Polish and Mexican. That also means great food. There’s 

 are ongoing. Avondale is right off the Blue Line. 

 (between Diversey and Belmont) has vibrant, unique storefronts. 

As for “nowness,” two new buzzy bars did open last month: 

. And nightlife is the criteria I personally swear by, so you know I had to check them out.

On paper, Tune-Up fits the bill of cool. A bar in an old auto body shop? Let’s go. “Anti-freeze” cocktails? I’ll take two. The renovation misses the mark, though, favoring wood paneling over industrial edge. But hey, Tune-Up is open till 4 and 5 a.m. That 

Conveniently, Avondale is already home to one of the best! Alice’s Lounge, a beloved karaoke bar, has been around 

Rick Homuth already visited Belmont Tavern

 and lauded the eclectic addition to the neighborhood. It arrives next to the Belmont Blue Line, in the space of a former Polish dive bar that’s sat dormant for 25 years. Adjacent Logan Square has plenty of overhauled (aka fake) dive bars — like Small Bar and Quality Time, both owned by 

 — but Belmont Tavern felt distinct as soon as I walked in.

It still smelled like sawdust. The drinks were $12, 

. And it was freaking packed. Every time the door opened, a “Cheers” moment broke out as friends found one another. 

I feel like this might be a genuinely cool, laid-back new hang! Good job, Avondale!

The cold is here, and snow is inevitable. So here’s a reminder on how to safely navigate Chicago’s winter roads.

Before bad weather really sets in, give your car a 

 — check your battery health, lights, brakes, wipers, windshield fluid, and tire pressure. (Pro tip: Make sure you have de-icing windshield fluid.)

: Put a quarter into the tread of your tire and look for George Washington’s head. If you can see any part of the top of his head, you don’t have enough tread, and you should replace those tires.

Planning a trip outside the city and its salted streets? Invest in the right tires — either snow / all-season wheels. Snow chains are legal in Illinois, but are dangerous on bare roads.

Keep your gas tank at least half full to decrease the risk of getting stranded in bad weather.

Know your route — look at a map before you start driving to avoid extra distraction on your GPS or getting lost.

Maintain steady speeds and keep extra space between yourself and other cars — no matter what type of vehicle you have.

Be extra careful on bridges and underpasses, which tend to be slickest.

Remove all snow and ice from your windows, hood, and roof before you drive.

If you begin to skid, let off the accelerator and brake, then turn your steering wheel in the direction you want to go.

If you are moving this month in Chicago, you’re not alone. The summer months are a popular time to sign a new lease and move into a new place. 

Local real estate broker Andy Svalesen shares apartment hunting tips

Svalesen says consider where you spend most of your time, your budget, and public transportation access.

 if you’re in your late 20s and early 30s

, which means you should diversify where you’re looking for an apartment. Consider working with a broker! Not only do they have access to more listings, landlords almost always pay their commission.

Determining if an apartment is reasonably priced is hard. Svalesen says $2 a square foot is “golden.” That means an 800-square-foot apartment for $1,600 is a good deal in his books.

In this market, you’re going to want to start your search early.

Check that windows close easily, look for water damage, and 

If all looks good, apply right then and there. Not only do you want to indicate you’re an easy tenant, but you want to get your application in early.

One red flag? High application fees. A normal range is between $25 and $85, so if your prospective landlord is charging $200, you might want to reconsider.

How to Find an Apartment in Chicago

Pride celebrations are underway across the city, including in Northalsted where 

 will take place later this month. But the North Side neighborhood’s name is new-ish: Many still know Northalsted as Boystown.

Chicago Social Butterflies newsletter editor Jake Wittich joined the City Cast Chicago podcast a couple of years ago to explain how the 

name change came from an effort to make the neighborhood more inclusive

This interview was edited for length and clarity.

“I've personally heard rumblings of, ‘Why is it called Boystown? What about Girlstown?’ … But I would say the official push began around June 2020, when local activist and podcaster Devlyn Camp — along with their friend Jen Freitag — put out a petition calling on the Northalsted Business Alliance to drop the Boystown nickname from all their marketing and hopefully phase it out of the neighborhood.”

Where did the name Northalsted come from?

“The word Northalsted has been around since around 1980, which is when the Northalsted Business Alliance formed. It's also been used in the 

, an annual festival that happens every summer in the neighborhood. There was already a sense of familiarity with the name. And I think people who supported Northalsted as the name also liked it because it's just a geographic location. … But then on the flip side, I heard a lot of resistance to changing the name because people feared it was erasing the LGBTQ identity of the neighborhood, and that's what made this area special.”

Why do we still need gayborhoods in Chicago?

“Decades ago, LGBTQ people really just needed spaces that they could discreetly interact with each other and form communities. So those were the bars. But now as it's more acceptable to be LGBTQ, the needs have changed a little bit. Now, the needs are more so for health care and social services.”

Pride Fest and the Pride Parade will take place in Northalsted later this month. But many still know the North Side neighborhood as Boystown.

After I moved to Bucktown earlier this year, I asked Hey Chicago readers for help sourcing what to explore in the neighborhood and in nearby Wicker Park. As always, you delivered.

 brought wealthy residents to the area, where mansions were built out of stone and brick. The working class population grew in the 1930s as Milwaukee Avenue became known as the Polish Corridor, and again in the ‘60s and ‘70s as the area’s Latino population increased. Efforts to revitalize the area in the ‘80s have led to the gentrification we see today.

Richard Goldsmith has lived in the area for 15 years. He shared his recs — and I’m throwing in a few of mine I’ve discovered.

Developers in the early 20th century converted the swampy lands in the southern part of Archer Heights into residences while railroads were in the northern part. Predominantly white for decades,
