Have you seen the Millennium Park Christmas Tree yet? It’s a 68-foot Norway Spruce that was cut down Nov. 21 in Glenview and donated by the Mason family! It’ll be on display through early January, but if you want one of your own, here’s a guide to different varieties in the region.

Fraser Fir

The “Cadillac of Christmas trees” earned its reputation because of its pretty color, fragrant scent, and firm branches. Fraser firs also retain needles well, which means less cleanup.

Balsam Fir

A Balsam fir might be the quintessential Christmas tree between its strong evergreen aroma and dark green needles.

Douglas Fir

Looking for a more affordable, kid-friendly tree? The Douglas fir has less prickly needles and is better suited for lighter-weight ornaments.

Colorado Blue Spruce

This was the city’s official Christmas Tree last year! While the tree’s blue and dark green needles are stunning, they fall out easily and are prickly. Wear gloves and long sleeves while you handle.

White Pine

If you want a less aromatic tree, the white pine is your guy. With daintier branches, you’re better off with lightweight ornaments or wrapping the tree in lights and garlands.

Check out where to buy trees in the city and where to chop them down nearby. And if you’re bringing a tree in from the rugged wilderness, make sure there aren’t any critters who are using it as a home and hose it down before bringing it inside!

Also, feel free to send some photos of your decorated trees 📸
