Tax Day is April 15. And with less than a month to file your 2024 income tax return, we’ve got ways to help you avoid paying for tax prep software and get free help in Chicago.
Tax Assistance Program
The City of Chicago has partnered with the nonprofit Ladder Up to offer this free tax program for full-year Illinois residents. They offer walk-in services throughout the city. Check here to see if you qualify, and what to bring.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
Find free tax assistance with an IRS-certified tax counselor or get access to free self-preparation tax software through the foundation’s Tax-Aide program. Their site makes it easy to find a location near you, the service type you’re looking for, and work in your preferred language.
University of Chicago
If you are a current student, parent, or guardian, the University of Chicago offers tax information sessions to help answer all your tax questions. Plus, their website can direct you to other resources.
IRS Programs
Direct File is the Internal Revenue Service’s most popular program for free tax filing. You can import documents from your smartphone or laptop and receive guided help. Direct File also offers live support from IRS staff. It’s only available in 25 states, including Illinois (though there is speculation DOGE may cut the program next year.)
IRS Free File is another guided tax prep software for individuals who earn less than $84,000. Regardless of income, the IRS’s free fillable forms can help you file with ease.
The IRS also offers two free basic tax prep options for qualified individuals through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs. VITA and TCE sites are generally available in community and neighborhood centers, including libraries, schools, and malls. Check the VITA Locator Tool for a location near you. Or, call 800-906-9887.
